Bruises

Bruises – makeup and hair project

For this collaboration with the photographer Dave Imms, I approached bruising as something expressive rather than purely anatomical. Instead of relying on the familiar purples, greens, and yellows, I built the bruises using unexpected, vibrant colours — vivid blues, magentas, yellows and greens— allowing them to sit somewhere between injury and artwork. Layering sheer washes of pigment over skin, I focused on translucency and texture so the bruises still felt organic, as though they lived beneath the surface, while the colours challenged the viewer’s expectations. The result was a series of marks that felt emotionally charged and visually striking, transforming bruising into a bold, painterly element that complemented the photographer’s vision and reframed damage as beauty.
